Used-car pre-purchase inspection: is your quote fair?
A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is an independent check of a used car before you buy it. Here's what a good one covers, what drives the price, and the red flags to watch for in a quote.
What a pre-buy inspection should cover
Engine: leaks, noises, belts, hoses, fluid condition, signs of overheating
Transmission and drivetrain: shift quality, fluid, CV joints/axles, driveline play
Brakes: pad and rotor wear, lines, fluid, parking brake
Steering and suspension: tie rods, ball joints, bushings, shocks/struts
Tires: tread depth, uneven wear, age
Underbody: rust, frame damage, prior repair or accident evidence
